In recognition of the wide-ranging contributions of Women in Science (WiS), Dr. Renu Swarup (then Secretary of DBT) announced an online portal dedicated to all Women Scientists funded by Department of
Biotechnology.
Developement of the portal was assigned to the NIPGR HRD Cell and it was termed “SWATI” portal (Science for Women: A Technology and Innovation Portal). The SWATI portal is intended to serve as a Gateway to view the Expertise and Contributions
of Indian Women in Science, specially to mark the 75th year of Indian Independence, in
celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
In 2022, the SWATI portal was adopted for expansion by the IAP (Inter Academy panel) of the Indian science academies to cover all Indian women in STEM.
ABOUT SWATI
An Initiative of the IAP (Inter Academy Panel of India)
ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE PORTAL BY SECRETARY, DBT
DATA COLLECTION FOR SWATI
- In order to accurately create the SWATI portal, the NIPGR HR Cell began with the information from Indian women researchers who have been funded by the DBT, including PIs, post docs and students.
- Under the wider expansion of SWATI through the Inter academy panel (IAP), underway currently, data is being collected for Indian lady students of colleges and universities, graduate research scholars, post-doctoral researchers, administrative staff, scientists, science communicators and academic faculty.
- The IAP (Inter Academy panel) of the Indian science academies has expressed confidence that SWATI can be scaled up exponentially, to reach out to each and every Indian woman in STEM, across all career stages and subjects, spanning both Academia and the Industry, enabling reliable and statistically significant long term research on gender patterns and equality data in STEM.
JOINING SWATI
We encourage all women in STEM (who have studied or worked in India for any length of time) to Join SWATI.
